SIAH member Keith Briggs has just published a paper on the origin of the words "shingle" and "dene", which are found around the Suffolk coast (for example, Shingle Street, and The Denes in Lowestoft).

Both words have long been considered to be of obscure origin, are now proposed to have been borrowed from Dutch or Low German, and evidence is presented from Suffolk local documents to support this.

The full paper is accessible from http://keithbriggs.info/papers.html.
