Mendlesham Armoury Project conference

Date: Saturday 11th October
Time: 10.00 - 17.00
Taking place in Mendlesham, Suffolk

Speakers include:

The Mendlesham Armoury Research Group – ‘Discoveries’
Dr Neil Younger – ‘The parishtrained bands in context’
Dr Steven Gunn – ‘Investigating weapons accidents’
Simon Metcalf, the King’s Armourer – ‘Mendlesham Reflections’

In 2024, the Mendlesham Armoury Research Group secured National Lottery Heritage Funding for two purposes: to conserve and re-display the collection, and to enable a small team of volunteers to read and transcribe the many early modern parish documents in Suffolk Archives, Ipswich.  The team is publishing a comprehensive booklet of their transcriptions and interpretations, which will be launched at this conference.

Delegates will have the opportunity to visit the oak-lined strongroom above St Mary’s Church porch in the company of Dr Tobias Capwell, to view the original armour collection it holds. Hands-on workshops will enable delegates to investigate original 16th and 17th century armour and weapons. An exhibition will be open throughout the afternoon

Tickets are £40 and include lunch.
